Information Communication Technology (ICT)

What is the most appropriate approach for teaching young learners?

There is no right answer to this question, as it will depend on many factors: the age of the children, class size, the competency of the teacher, availability of resources, the school context and the framework constructed by bodies that create the educational landscape for the locality.
Information Communication Technology (ICT) breakthroughs have brought new opportunities to restructure the language learning/teaching settings. Nowadays , ICT has opened new avenues and brought new challenges to language learners as well as teachers. The responsibility of learning tasks has shifted towards the learners and this has dramatically changed the roles of teachers. However, it should be noted that modern language teachers determine the quality of learning process, and not ICT. Technology is not just about making learning modern or fun. It needs to be integrated into the learning process and evaluated in terms of what benefits it will have for the learners.
Technology in the classroom does not have to form an entire lesson. It can simply form a small part of a project. It also does not have to be something pre-produced and edited by the students. It can in fact be something entirely original. Finally, it does not have to be about the latest and greatest flashy tools. It is not about the end product. It's about the process of learning.
A vast amount of literature exploring the potentialities of ICT with regards to teaching and learning languages can be found. Educators are particularly interested in technology’s interactive capabilities, such as providing immediate feedback and increasing learner autonomy.

Every teacher tries to complement their course books by doing hours of researching, downloading, editing and tailoring whatever they find and make their own lesson plans. It is great to see our students enjoy the class and learn using activities that we have prepared ourselves.
Schools and colleges reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of current day society and therefore have a duty to ensure that all students are able to access the curriculum, achieving to the best of their own abilities. Students within the educational system for whom English is an additional language have very special needs which need to be addressed by teachers and educators. Using ICT to support English language learners pose challenges for teachers of how to exploit new and emerging such technologies. We as language teachers should consider new strategies in teaching but ICT without correct strategies cannot help us in classroom.
